If having too many fonts installed isn’t your issue, it’s possible that gimp’s font cache has been corrupted somehow. User > appdata > roaming > gimp > 210 folder.
This will make the font available not only to gimp, but to any other program that uses fontconfig.

This means all my other programs get these custom fonts (like in microsoft word or powerpoint) which is annoying. I have tried to resume the project, using gimp 2.8.14, running on ubuntumate 15.10, and, whatever i do, i am now not able to set the font for text to be entered.
